Dust and debris shot into the air as blaster fire engaged around his position. Pock marks in the landscape whittled away at the receding cover and General Callandryn dis’Vestrial knew that he had to move soon or he would be outgunned and under protected in short order.
The General opened up his comm and spoke in a hurried tone, “Lieutenant Colonel Kodoss, where is that damn AT-ST pilot?”
“ETA less than one minute, sir.” Lieutenant Colonel Kodoss’ voice was as calm and sure as always. His position as Tactical Commander of the Legion of Myth kept him at the forefront of all engagements the organization took part in, and a little bit of blaster fire wasn’t enough to intimidate him. “I see it approaching now.”
On the other hand, since leaving the world of Myth, the General rarely confronted pitched engagements. Simple raids and police actions kept his gunnery skills up, but he spent absolutely too much time behind a desk and was not as used to this type of combat as he once was.
Finally, he thought, as the AT-ST approached the combat zone. Over the comm he heard Lieutenant Colonel Kodoss give the pilot his instructions. After getting confirmation from the pilot he announced his plan to the General.
“Sir, on my mark I need you to set up suppression fire. I will follow the AT-ST in and pick off any targets that he misses.”
“Got it.”
A few seconds later Callandryn could hear the large cannons of the AT-ST fire. Instantly his position became quiet as the Rebels (he assumed) were ducking for cover from the large metal beast bearing down on them.
The comm channel hissed to life as he heard the words, “Now, sir.” Callandryn sprung into action and fired off volleys of blaster fire toward the Rebel position. Heads ducked as his ruby beams of energy flew centimeters from their exposed flesh. He almost felt pity for them as he pinned them down and watched the explosive concussion of the AT-STs cannons kill them where they hid. Almost, but Callandryn knew the Rebels to be no more than terrorists and terrorists deserve their fate.
Out of the corner of his eye he could see Kodoss with his rifle charging in behind the AT-ST. Each shot Kodoss took was an act of precision - the deliverer of death. Slowly, Callandryn moved forward with his DX2 pistol in one hand and his FWG5 in the other. Catching up to the AT-ST and Kodoss he accepted the Lieutenant Colonel’s salute.
“Sir, the area is secure.”
“Thank you, Colonel.” Callandryn patted his subordinate and friend on the back, “Once again you did an excellent job.” The General couldn’t help but feel embarrassed and out of practice. Always the perfectionist, Callandryn never liked to feel like the fifth wheel or out of place, but going into combat with Kodoss was like going into combat as a child next to a special forces operative.
Removing his helmet he sat on some of the broken mortar and rested his legs. “That was too close.”
“Yes sir.” Was the only reply that Kodoss delivered. It was a matter of fact statement, not one of anxiety or excitement. “Sir, we should move on. They will return in numbers to determine what happened here. Without reinforcements we will not be able to stand against them.”
“Aye, you’re right. Are the others near?”
“They await your arrival.”
Wishing to rest just a moment longer, Callandryn put his helmet back on and grudgingly moved out. His next mission would be a much easier one and one he’s been more accustomed to of late - inspecting their new headquarters.
Due to recent events, the General had made the decision to establish a more permanent headquarters on Dantooine. From here they could be both closer to the conflict with the rebels and hopefully attract more recruits to fight against the Rebel terrorists. The Emperor favors those who do his bidding and do it well, and Callandryn was worried that his people would be overlooked due to the small size of their organization if they weren’t able to take on some more difficult missions.
Being so close to the Imperial Outpost here also had its advantages as there was a starport nearby for missions off world. All in all he smiled at the beauty of its location. After initial doubts when Kodoss brought the idea of Dantooine up to him, he was glad that he reconsidered. Nothing but good things can come from this as long as we remain vigilant. Rebels still crept in the area to be sure, but Callandryn thought that would be good for his people to keep them combat ready and on their toes.
After cresting a hill he could see the building that would be their new home. The mortar and marble a stark contrast to the purple flora the surrounded the area. The magnificence of man and the Empire, Callandryn mused. The building itself also housed its own protection being built into the side of a hill; practical and tactical.
Coming closer Callandryn could see a man waving to him from the entrance of the structure. Excellent, Colonel Kedryn is here. Lieutenant Allandhra and Shayla must be inside completing the pre-inspection taskings. Callandryn waved back with a smile on his face.
The smile soon turned into horror as the man reached over his shoulder and drew a weapon that was strapped to his back. As fast as the wind the man seemed as Callandryn dove to the ground - the barrel trained on him unwaveringly the entire way. Three shots almost in unison burst out. Callandryn saw his life flash before his eyes. A forth blast a split second later ... an eternity ... sounded off as the man fell.
Callandryn collected himself as he landed from his dive with his weapon in hand. Coming from the far side of the hill Callandryn saw the Colonel and two Lieutenants rush forth. “Rebel down! The infiltrator didn’t get off a single shot.”
Callandryn’s mind was in a spin. “What just happened?” Callandryn asked while standing back up.
“The Rebel has been scouting out our new base all day.” Colonel Kedryn answered. “We decided to watch him from a distance while we awaited your return.” Saluting the Colonel continued, “We had hoped that he’d call in more Rebels so that we could perhaps flush out an entire cell of them. It seems he was a lone assassin.”
Upon inspecting the body on the steps there was nothing to be found. “Three hits to his neck and one to his head.” Callandryn smirked, “I’m glad you’re on my side.” Once again removing his helmet, Callandryn sighed. “Are we ready for this inspection?”
“Yes sir all four said in unison.” Callandryn entered the building.
When the inspection was over Callandrn smiled. Well done ladies and gentlemen! Only one demerit.” A flushed look of contempt washed over all of their faces. Much effort went into making this place spotless ... perfect ... and the General just had to find something, didn’t he?
Colonel Kedryn spoke up, “What is the demerit, sir?”
Smiling sardonically Callandryn answered, “There’s blood on the steps.” Before they could comment, answer, or even laugh Callandryn kept talking. “I think this is a sign of things to come. This war is not going to get easier. The Rebels are becoming desperate. I think it’s time that we remind them of the power and efficiency of the Empire ... and better yet, the Legion of Myth!”
“Colonel, do you have the banner?” He was answered with a nod. “Excellent! Lieutenants Shayla and Allandhra, would you please have the honor of raising our banner over the entrance way?” It was an order not a question.
“Yes, sir!”
The Lieutenants unfurled the banner and rose it slowly over the entrance way. The menacing orange claw on a subdued blue and tan shield sent notice to the galaxy that the Legion of Myth was here and that they planned to stay! Once in position the General took a step back and saluted the banner.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, from afar we traveled to find a new home for our people. Although we have struggled from our initial mishap that brought us to Rori, through to this day here on Dantooine, we have struggled ... we have persevered! Know that through adversity we find strength and camaraderie! Be warned; I present to you the fiercest warriors on any side of the galaxy! We are the Legion of Myth!”
Upon completion of those few words everyone saluted and followed the General into the structure. “In these walls, ladies and gentlemen, we are family. In here you are free to speak to one another as family not worrying about the protocols of officer and enlisted. In here we respect each other like family and will laugh, share, and cry as a family. Is that understood?”
Immediately Callandryn heard murmurs including mocking comments about him being too short to be someone’s father, Shayla’s hair made her look like a man, and that Kedryn wasn’t allowed to turn the place into the ‘old folks home’. General Callandryn dis’Vestrial, leader of the Legion of Myth smiled and knew that he was home.
