My first experience with an MMO was Ultima Online. Oh, and I didn’t play it long – a couple of weeks I think. I was new to the MMO community and I didn’t quite understand how the community operated at that time. The game pretty much bored me. Then ...
After some fool lured me out of the city to give me a weapon then proceeded to kill me, I was pissed. When I was robbed at the bank, I got more pissed. When two PCs blocked us from exiting a dungeon (causing our deaths) I quit.
I don’t take too kindly to rude behavior. But such is the way of children and mental midgets (no matter how old they are) when there’s no accountability.
The next MMO I picked up was Asheron’s Call. (Aja, Shayla, another friend, and I all played characters with the last name Olafsun) It was fun ... until the greed set in. Oh, not with us but with the community.
We’d go to a place to get some equipment off a creature and people would be doing their best to kill the creature before you (or somehow get you killed in the process). Eventually, I gave up on gear and focused on exploring.
Shayla may remember more than one time we (my Patron, Ragar and I) had long ass multiple corpse runs.
“Think we can kill them?”
“No.”
“Wanna try?”
“Sure.”
WHACK ... THUD ... BOP ... BANG ...
“Did you die?”
“Yeah. You?”
“Yep.”
“Where’s your corpse?”
“In the middle of the camp.”
“Think we’ll die getting them?”
“A few times.”
“Ready?”
“hehe ... yep.”
I LOVED IT! We’d explore places ... get killed ... and do it again. But you see, gear wasn’t so important then. And in worst case scenario, the junk I had was easily replaced.
So, why did I leave AC to go play EQ? Because AC had no role-play potential. Everyone was the same. If you weren’t an item mage/archer you sucked. (Talk to Aja about Darktide, I only played there long enough to see 50th level people killing people just spawning into the game for the first time at 1st level.)
So, I moved on to EQ because it had great RP potential. Wow, was I in for a rude shock. Actually, EQ started out okay. When I first started to play I didn’t see the greed and gear consciousness that people have now. No, that didn’t happen until the Kunark expansion.
Let me explain something to you here and now. NONE of my EQ characters ever had more than 2,000 Platinum ... ever. I hear people talking about items that cost 50,000 (and more) and I laugh. Nothing in EQ is worth that kind of cash ... NOTHING.
“But ... but ... I can get the ultimate sword of ubreness!”
“I need a fungi (Regeneration) cloak.”
People would say the stupidest things. First of all, one NEVER impresses me with their gear unless it looks cool. Stats don’t mean shit. When I tell people that I used my 49th level Shadowknight (who only wore Darkforge and Sentient Armor) as a MAIN TANK in Velks they don’t believe me. Heh! My Necro wore an Oracle Robe into his 50’s. And no one ever doubted my capability as a Necromancer.
You don’t ‘need’ gear ... you ‘want’ gear you greedy, selfish bastards.
It’s not the gear ...
... it’s not how ‘leet’ you are ...
... it’s how well you know the class you are.
I am so fucking sick of people not playing within the spirit of the game. EQ is SUPPOSED to have conflict. Why the hell are their factions if Dark Elves and High Elves can group together? That’s retarded!
Until I was in my 40s, my Necro NEVER grouped with a Dark Elf. (Again, Allandhra and Shayla can confirm this.) Nor would he group with an Enchanter in Dark Elf illusion or a Rogue/Bard wearing the mask of the Deceiver. (Long story why my Erudite Necro hated Dark Elves.) It blew my mind when the RP guild I was in basically booted me out for joining in on (and role-playing the thrill of) a raid on Neriak (the Dark Elf city).
Sorry folks, but fantasy realms are based on conflict! Quit trying to be the exception to the rule. If you want to be a good guy. play a good guy. Don’t fukkin play a Dark Elf or a Troll and try to be good. Elves SHOULD still hunt you down and slay you. Damn commies trying to make everyone equal. EVERYONE ISN’T EQUAL!!
Anyhoo ... the game turned into a greed and gear fest and no one cared for the story so I couldn’t deal with it any more. God, I love that WoW is having the group and language barrier!!!!
So in comes Shadowbane. I had been following that game for years. Finally it was released. The MMO with the greatest Lore of any game out there; with a TRUE political potential based on race and class lines ... and look what happened. Bleh. Every guild is the same damn thing with a different shield over their head.
What happened to the penalties for not sticking to the lore?
What happened to throwing a bone to the people who do play within the Lore?
The only politics in the game was 16-year old munchkin with the red shield –vs- the 12-year old munchkin with the black shield trying to compare penis sizes. Think of how amazing the game could have been if they enforced Role-Playing? I’m sure I’d still be there now.
So, what about SWG? As noted in another thread, I love the graphics and the potential for involvement in the plot. But what do we have now? What is the purpose? For now it’s just grab two missions to the west, complete them and start again ... over and over again.
Using current designs only, my perfect MMO would be ...
EQ style hunting grounds. But instead of having to camp MoB x for loot z, it would be a case of camping Zone x for loot z. I mean if you want a Sword of Ubreness, it drops off of any creature within the zone (or a specific creature that can spawn anywhere in the zone). I HATE static camps.
Shadowbane lore. But in my world it would be enforced ... much like what WoW is trying to do. Also, one cannot sub-guild to a guild not similar in beliefs nor could they accept sub-guilds that don’t conform to all other guilds/sub-guild in the Nation.
SWG Character creation and progression. (However, some races would be limited to what they can be. No, Dwarves may not be mages. But Elves couldn’t be Crossbowmen either. Something like that.)
The game would be enforced factions and remaining within those factions. With races and classes that have true limitations and strengths. (Even good gear wouldn’t be able to fully compensate for the flaws).
Bleh ... I have to go home so I guess I’m done now. I’d love to hear your comments to my rant. ;D
